2010 SRGC OPEN

Winners of the 2010 South Ronaldsay Golf Club Open.

Eighty one players competed for the South Ronaldsay Golf Club Open for 2010 and it proved to be a very tough nut to crack once again. With only a handful of golfers breaking scratch. The early morning players had some heavy showers to compete with before the day cleared and the wind freshened to pose a different problem for the later starters.

In the very first threeball of the day Brian Kirkness posted a very fine 65 to set the mark, only to be disqualified for moving an out of bounds marker to play his ball. Without knowing this was a two shot penalty he signed for a wrong score. No luck there but his win in the putting competition with a score of 17 was of some consolation.

Mark Byers and Bill Banks were the next to show both scoring 64's shortly followed by Martin Wick on 66. The home club were making a strong push for the overall net trophy. These scores stood for a long time with the early players retiring to the Murray Arms for a well deserved meal, which to everyones agreement was fantastic.

The club also offered refreshments of their own throughout the day and a big thank you to all the people behind the scenes for all their hard work.

Meanwhile back on the course Iain Johnston came close to the leaders with a 67. Also a first for the South Ronaldsay Open, was a very fine hole in one on the 2nd, this was achieved by our club captain Erik Donaldson (a very expensive shot but well worth it!)

Playing as a late replacement for Steven Walls, Stuart Gray also posted a 64 to make it a three way tie for the nett trophy which a very delighted Bill Banks won on count back. Well done Bill.

Gross scores were now the order of the day and a fine 71 by Brian Corsie and 70 by Andrew Bonner were good scores. Playing in the last group of the day Peter McKinlays 70 tied with Andrew only to be pipped by Steven Rendall who equalled Sean Fotheringhames course record from last year. A great end to a great day.
